It is autumn, 1917,
After the costly entente offensives of 1916, the German high command adopts a defensive doctrine for the start of 1917. The entente are exhausted from a long year of being on the offense, so they too, decide to rest and catch their breath.
However, stalemate does not mean that action has ceaced. The German command, after noticing the entente settling down in their lines, have gotten new hope to gain the initiative. Maybe the roles of 1916 will be reversed for next year, if Germans will have their way.
